Most recent additions include several quite rare posters covering subjects as diverse as the Olympics which was never held (1916 in Amsterdam), Puccini's major opera of 1926 "Turandot", Roger Broders' iconic Monaco Monte-Carlo, the Wembley Exposition of 1925... subject of the recent movie "The Kings Speech"... and finally, in all its 1930s glory, the ultimate hideaway off the coast of Los Angeles, the Catalina Islands poster by Otis Shephard.

New additions includes a group of 6 very rare Southern Pacific posters from the 1920's by several artists.

Lake Tahoe and the Sierras are featured in several of the poster images.

In addition, two Alphonse Mucha posters have been added to the site; the Biscuits Lefevre-Utile poster is the rarest variant of this image and is in its original carton condition.

Featured amongst recent acquisitions is a scarce Jules Cheret Theatre de L'Opera Carnaval poster with a truly delightful imagery.

Upcoming Shows This Month in Alexandria , VA and Chicago

This month I'll be traveling to Alexandria, VA to participate in a well-established antique show called "Antiques in Alexandria" running from Friday, March 12th through Sunday March 14th at the Episcopal High School Field House at 3900 West Braddock Road. In addition toward the end of the month I will be participating in the Chicago Vintage Poster Fair at the Chicago Cultural Center, 77 E. Randolph St. from March 19th through the 21st. Many of the posters in the New Additions section of my website will be shown. If you have a request for me to bring a specific poster please contact me by March 15.

A diverse group of posters has been added to the site this week, including the ever popular patriotic "I Want You" by James Montgomery Flagg as well as a quite rare turn of the century Louis Rhead poster entitled "Prang's Easter Publications" and equally rare Pan American World Airways poster for New York City depicting the Rockefeller center Atlas sculpture. Alphonse Mucha is represented by one of my favorites, the La Plume variant of "Zodiac", and Toulouse-Lautrec's "May Milton."

In addition, if you take a look at the Categories section you will find a new heading for Les Maitres de L'Affiche. I have listed over 100 images from the series which was produced between 1895 and 1900.

Well, I finally have gotten around to listing a group of Art Exhibition posters [appearing in the "New Additions" section], mostly French from the 1950/60's. There are the old School of Paris standbys, Picasso, Miro, Chagall and Matisse, but also several other artists: Magritte, Marini, Cocteau, Leger, Derain and Braque. Many of these posters are affordably priced under $1000.
Several outstanding American posters of the 1960's appear in the "New Additions", as well, namely the Rick Griffin "Joint Show" and Jasper Johns' target image of 1968 used for the Merce Cunningham Dance Co.
Not to be missed is the glamourous and dreamy 1930's image of Atlantic City [for the Pennsylvania Railroad] designed by Eggleston.This is surely one of the highlights of railroad poster imagery.

I have focused on adding smaller and more affordable items to the website [under the "Small" category]. You will find a group of Georges Barbier's unique colored engravings for his designs in the renowned book entitled "Chansons de Bilitis", published in 1922. In addition, you will find a group of miniaturized posters which were created by the illustrious Ricordi printing company of Milan, c. 1912. These smaller versions of the poster image were used by the company for promotion of its quality poster printing and the artistry of its poster designers.

We seldom see the actual full-size posters due to the Italians lack of interest in collecting posters at the beginning of the century and due to the generally large scale of the posters. So these smaller versions represent a special historic record of the creative commercial poster. Unlike the "Masters of the Poster" series, which was published in Paris between 1895 and 1900 as a subscription for the collecting public, these Ricordi pieces were only prepared for the Ricordi salespeople, whose job it was to represent the company's diverse artistic poster portfolio.and therefore they are quite scarce in the marketplace.

Two very rare posters of the 1920's/30's... "Visit Yucatan" and "Winter Sports in the Dunes/South Shore Lines"... have been added to the site in the New Additions section. The South Shore Line poster from 1925 has not been seen in the marketplace for at least a quarter of a century and represents the best of Oscar Rabe Hanson's poster work for the fondly remembered railroad. I am including a link to a well researched article prepared by Stephen G. McShane which delineates the history of the South Shore Line. This article, in an expanded format, became the basis for the book entitled "Moonlight in Duneland: The Illustrated Story of the Chicago South Shore and South Bend Railroad" which was co-authored by Ronald D. Cohen and McShane.

Chicago Vintage Poster Fair

The Chicago Vintage Poster Fair will be held March 27-29 at the Chicago Cultural Center at 77 E Randolph St., off of Michigan Ave. I will be exhibiting in the main room. I can provide free passes to the first 10 people to contact me with their mailing address. There will be about 25 dealers participating with a broad variety of vintage poster material. This year the Poster Fair will feature a special exhibit entitled "From Biplane to Jet Plane" and I will be contributing several rare posters to the exhibit.
